Predator control planning made easy

A basic guide to TrapSim Plus

Purpose and getting started

TrapSim Plus is a simulation tool to help managers quickly compare the efficacy and cost of controlling invasive predators using traps and/or bait stations, and guide them towards an appropriate control regime. The user begins by first defining the area they are working in and selecting the pest species they are targeting.

Scenario

The user constructs a ‘scenario’ by defining the length of control, the type and number of devices, and the checking interval of devices. Devices are selected by a drop-down list which has associated parameters such as cost, trap capacity and whether the device has passed NAWAC testing for that species.

Additional scenarios

Additional scenarios can be constructed with different specifications (e.g. different device-types and/or number of devices). Once the user has constructed all the scenarios they wish to compare, the simulation is run for multiple iterations of each scenario. The results allow the user to compare between scenarios in terms of remaining population size, total cost and cost-effectiveness.

Disclaimer

TrapSim Plus is designed to provide guidance to managers planning pest control and allows for relative comparisons between proposed networks. There are many factors that cannot be accounted for and therefore results from the simulations are likely to differ from actual pest control carried out.
